Fenestration News
We are doing well; the solid positive message is continuing.
To create a perspective of this, it is also said that the number of participants in the fenestration industry has declined by 30% recently. This is down from what was already a very low base-line, meaning that there are significantly less players than 25 years ago.
All good then, there is more to go around. There is of course a but in that scenario, logic dictates if sales are not more than 30% up, companies are marking time, heading towards the brick wall. That’s the rub, the allusion. With orders at all companies being up and management for the most part being involved fire-fighting to keep pace with the day-to-day chores, it's all too easy to get sucked into the belief that they are doing extremely well.
As a result, the eye comes off the ball. Things that are good practice get forgotten, left to one side, 'hey' tomorrow is another day.
With the volume of active companies being significantly down, so is the marketing, the raising of consumer awareness. Marketing is down because some companies are so busy they don't see the need. So, the consumer also loses interest.
If the need isn't created with the consumer they drift towards other aspirations. This week it will be the $1000 Samsung phone, next it will be the much leaked $1000 i-Phone. Those companies are marketing hard creating the need, yet it is still only a phone. No energy saving, definitely not green.
Ironically the consumer perceives the need to be seen to be participating on saving energy, saving the planet and being comfortable at home.
With 30% less players around in the Fenestration Industry, there appears to be 30% less noise, so 30% less effort to keep the industry alight.
As an alternative, these same consumers can just as easily feel fulfilled by spending their hard-earned cash on a new electric or hybrid car. Which seems bizarre as the makers of those vehicles hide the fact there is a short lifespan for the rechargeable battery that costs more than a home full of new windows to replace in just a few short years.
Those that are keeping their profile up, are also helping to ensure a future in what probably is a difficult time around the corner. If the market is to be believed some big (meaning big) names that are now mere shadows of their former selves, have debts that are not. The debts are big in magnitude which in turn will impact on the supply chain, which affects everyone. The unprepared will not be immune from the fallout.

Letter to the editor: rectifying coloured PVCu
Dear Ian,
We’re receiving more and more calls asking for advice on rectifying coloured PVCu jobs that have gone wrong because window frames just aren’t being reinforced properly.
The most recent was a new-build apartment block where the architect had specified Anthracite Grey PVCu windows. The fabricator hadn’t used steel reinforcement in the frames and as temperatures rose in early summer, residents in the south facing apartments started to complain about sashes sticking and not closing correctly. On inspection, warping of the profile caused by heat from the sun was plain to see. ...more
Best wishes,
