Observations

Wrong Glazing, right.

The main talking points this week are prompted by what is being highlighted in the news in and around the industry. The fear of course is there is so much to shout about that the shouting then becomes background noise as the inevitable scanning and simply taking in a snapshot dilutes the information to hand.

We have received a very logical and informative letter from Jason McCabe of Clayton Glass. It does however highlight the claims we make in the industry being out of step with the way products are sold. In part this appears to be arrived at by a passion for testing/simulations and then people making the assumption that those results can be used to make the same claims in real life situations.

A conservatory, as we know, when it has a floor area of 16 m² or less struggles to provide a year round comfortable living space. It suffers with being either too hot or too cold. The question posed, is it best to reflect the heat or pull the heat in? Making an inconsistent call, or mix and matching the glazing used will have the effect of causing the customer to miss the benefit they are lead to believe they will enjoy.

For the last 12 years, we among a small number of glass specialists, have been promoting the merits of dedicated glass for conservatory roofs boasting several key features including solar control, anti-glare and true self cleaning properties. Yet I believe we have as a sector been installing windows and doors in these installations that aren’t as fit as they could be for this purpose.

The windows and doors installed in new conservatories may be basic clear/clear, more typically standard low E, or even carry a Window Energy Rating. A typical ‘A’ rated window is designed bring in solar heat, something that the specialist glass that is now fitted in the roofing plane is designed exactly to stop, and for good reason. So whilst the roof glass keeps a large proportion of solar heat gain out - in our case as much as 83%, often the windows and doors below may well be designed to do the exact opposite...[ more ]

The Chancellor announced funding to build 400,000 new affordable homes in England over the coming five years in November’s Autumn Statement.

Of this, around £4 billion of government cash will be used to help public and private house builders construct 135,000 homes that will be sold into shared ownership.

A further £2.3 billion fund was also unveiled with the aim of building 200,000 new properties, which will be made exclusively available to first-time buyers and sold to them at a discount. Additional funding will be put towards the construction of specialist homes for the elderly and those with disabilities.
