I don’t want to be churlish….

To a degree the trade media is exactly that, media promoting a trade and as such it is a marketing tool, meaning it’s a way for business to gain recognition and the awareness needed to be the first thought on people’s minds when a buying need arises.

On the other hand you have the mass media, where for the most part the item being sold is the media and the story itself. Here the emphasis is on a good story and selling that story. First and foremost it is the headline that grabs the attention; it’s there to draw the reader in. The more controversial the headline the better it does its job. It matters not that the item then goes on to contradict its own headline; it had done its job by getting the reader that far. All that was ever promised was a read; it was up to the reader to determine if it was a good read.

It’s slightly different with the trade media, generally there is an image to promote, an awareness level to develop, along with any claim made of benefits to the consumer being readily substantiated. In fact you could even suggest it’s a PR story that forms part of a company’s written guarantee/promise to the reader. This is where a good PR company (yes, I know, some of our best stories come from the guys at the front end) comes in, they generally know how to strike a balance between the recognition required and the story that needs to be told.... But many of your readers, including our customers and suppliers, will have been surprised that Polyframe didn’t figure in the Top 10 in Insight Data's recent report. We appeared 11th in the Top 30 with a turnover of £20.3m for Polyframe (Trade) Ltd.

Insight explained that to create consistency between companies they'd “elected to operate a single company model where we listed a single trading PVCU fabricator”. ... [...more ]
