Products and innovations from every quarter

At times it does appear as if everyone is wired to the same network. Not a physical network, more a telepathic one. Having just been to the launch of Synseal's impressive innovative Celsius solid roof, up pops Mark Warren with a tweet (@MarkWarren3) relating to Pret A Manger saying that innovation is responsible for a 16% sales boost.

Then, as if in unison, along come a whole range of new products and innovations from every quarter of the industry. In some ways the choice is overwhelming and a few short paragraphs here do not fully impart the opportunities these new introductions offer up.

Prosperity for an industry comes from growth; growth is caused by fulfilling, creating and then nurturing a need. That's the point behind new and innovative products. Of course we all knew that, unfortunately a jolt or nudge is sometimes needed to bring it back from dark recesses in our mind.

Picking up on Synseal as if to illustrate the point, the new team (OK, not quite any more) shows a departure in what is often thought of as a traditional methodology of innovating for the market in the Fenestration Industry. No longer is it 'how can we manipulate our traditional range to fulfil a need', more of, 'there is a need - how is the best way to fulfil it'. Hot on the heels of the radical approach of coming up with 'Warmcore' (yes a PVC extruder inventing in aluminium) along comes the 'Celsius' roof. At first look it's just another solid roof, and then the thought a 'PVC Systems Company idea' - new! - are you sure. Think again and this is the difference, the consumer has moved on from a polycarbonate roofed addition to their home. The din inside it and the adjacent rooms from even a gentle drizzle put paid to that illusion. The more natural answer of course is glass; it does the job well. However, anything with a floor area of less than 20m² struggles to be all year round usable, too hot or too cold for the most part. The consumer still has a need to extend, find more space, and refurbish existing. Enter the 'Celsius' roof, another solid roof you say, well not in the way you might think, this is more 'Huf Haus' assembly, than an adapted glazing bar process. That means for a day's work from guys with installation team skills, you have a well-insulated roof on and the inside dry. The downside as always with any solid roof installation is the bureaucracy of planning permission.

More outside the box thinking comes from Apeer, a door company with an innovative approach in creating a new system for windows and doors. Asa McGillian the MD of Apeer said "if we were going to enter the windows market I wanted to do it with a radically different product". Yes it's radical, yes it different, while at the same time being the most natural way to approach a window and door system. Just launched, already seems so normal. I would liken it to how adding 'Gorilla' glass to mobile devices is the modern approach and everything else just 'old hat'. While others struggle with or don't comprehend that what they think of as a super-dooper well insulated window, with its multiple chambers, warm edge IGU's and A+ designation, in the real world, in the consumers home it falls short and is anything but. By design the majority of these windows have just one single 1-2mm thin strip of flexible EPDM or similar between the outside and inside of people's homes, as such the efforts of the all singing and dancing bits are negated. With the Apeer Lumi there's no such handicap, even the Edgetech warm-edge spacer IGU should work as intended. You could even say the Apeer Lumi will do exactly what it says on the tin, but that might lead to copyright infringements.
